Now and then IMAGIKA is asked to be part of a project which uses green screens or chroma keying. NO, we didn’t work on any of the projects in the video below. The tech for this has been around since before Dave Letterman was a weather guy. There is definitely an art and a method in shooting with green screens but the results are fantastic. Most of the movie 300 was shot with green screens. Further more, you’d be shocked as to how much of what you see on TV and in films are shot using green screens. I ran across the video below in my feeds and thought I’d share. Enjoy!

I ran into a neat little problem with my workflow. For months I have been mindlessly controlling the volume of my monitors via the mixer. Knowing the Euphonix MC Control is capable of controlling system levels I decided to dive in and make it work. Took some trial and error to get the voodoo but it’s working and working GREAT. I will post a video of this tutorial in the next day or two when things calm down.

Launch Studio Monitor Express (SME)

Config > Set SME to use your audio device (in this case the Presonus FireStudio)

Patch > Set speaker outs to match the outs your device sends to your monitors

Sources > Create sources that correspond to what you need to listen to (in this case Logic Pro)

Main > Select which sources are available for each output

While SME is still open, open up the EuControl Settings > Assign and make sure the “Lock Control Room” option is checked

Launch Logic and set SME as the audio driver

BAM!!!! DONE!!! Any questions hit me up.

Effortlessly switch between multiple applications and workstations at the touch of a button.

The MC Control’s high-resolution touch-screen interface, motorized faders and arsenal of rotary encoders, soft keys and transport controls instantly snap to the selected application to put multi-format metering, plug-in parameters, track information and much more at your fingertips.

Most importantly, software developers like Apple, Steinberg, MOTU and others have worked closely to integrate native support for Euphonix’ EuCon control protocol into their DAWs to deliver an unmatched editing and mixing experience.” (Euphonix.com)

For the longest time I had simply been using the mouse and keyboard for all my video/audio workflow. After researching different control surfaces within my price range, the MC Control was an easy choice. I’m not necessarily able to work quicker but I AM able to be more efficient with my track automation in Logic.

Yes, at first I thought the iPad looked like complete crap. However, reason is now dictating what I think about the iPad. When the first iPhone was released in 2007, most of us came up with all the reasons why it was a horrible purchase but yet we still purchased it. So too will be our love affair with the iPad. However, this time around things will be different. We already have the app store and are getting a new iBook store (I’m sick of all the i names). Out of the box, the iPad should run most if not all of the apps we all have for the iPhone/iPod Touch. If we take a step further, we’ll find ourselves wondering what the iPad will become rather than what it is. By doing so, any rational thinking human MUST come to the conclusion that what the iPad will become far out weighs what it is.

We all know what it is so let’s speculate what it will turn into. My first thoughts are home automation, music production, professonal/finance, medical. Home automation is a no brainer in that the iPad will function as a wonderful, albeit large, master control for everything in your home. EVERYTING in your home includes monitoring power consumption, simple electrical commands such as dimming lights, and security. While the iPhone does a bang up job at this already, it will be the iPad mom and dad and even grandpa and grandma will use to automate their lives.

After working with MTV as a freelancer for a few years I really got into music production. Mastered Pro-Tools and now I’m on Logic. In my home studio, I use the Euphonix MC Control as part of my workflow. The Euphonix device allows me to interact with Logic by adjusting levels, scrubbing, mixing, fine tuning track automation, etc. With the iPad, my $2000 Euphonix unit could be replaced with the space saving iPad should Apple or some third party create an ‘app for that’. Most of what I do on my Euphonix is touch screen anyway so a move to the iPad is a no brainer. No, the iPad does not need a full version of Logic OR Pro-Tools (although that would be nice to mix on the fly). Another way to inject the iPad into a DAW is to transform it into a completely customizable midi controller for percussion or to trigger drums. The app store is full of great sequencing apps for all skill levels. Having these apps on the iPad will expand the balloon of creativity and make the sometimes mundane process of laying tracks actually pleasurable.

I’m not entirely sold on the beauty and majesty of Apple’s iWork for the iPad. Haven’t been a fan of paying for ANY office suite since I feel in love with Open Office. With a larger screen, Open Office, Zoho, and even Google Docs could really get a lot of miles out of the iPad. I’m an avid user Apple’s hardware but for email, docs, and calendar, nothing is better for my personally than Google’s products. Regardless of your poison, a robust office suite is a necessity for professionals. Lawyers, banks, tax professionals, and the like could all stand to benefit by using the iPad. Further, I suspect all the Apple stores will employ iPads and check out terminals. Apple is already using the iPod touch to ring you up and email your receipt. If nothing more, the iPad will make it easier to sign my name on.

Years ago I was plagued by an unknown illness for a few years. While visiting various doctors and hospitals I did notice one common denominator, EVERYONE used a clipboard. WILL the iPad replace the clipboard in the medical field…who knows. COULD the iPad replace the clipboard…ABSOLUTELY! Fully networked and with the right ‘app for that’, the medical industry could eliminate paperwork by as much as 70% (just a figure to make me look smart). All that crap we as patients need to fill out each time we are at a new doctor or hospital could be streamlined by the iPad. Fill it out in our laps, the server gobbles up our info and we get better…in theory of course. View MRI info, x-ray’s, medical history, etc.

That’s my take, for now, on the iPad. We’ll see in the months to come whether or not Apple truly made a revolutionary product fit for the masses.

Mike Grimmett of IMAGIKA together with Dan Schott of the Entropy Group produced and shot video to be distributed to Las Vegas news organizations in order to help Flugencio Garcia find a donor. The article below is from the Las Vegas Review Journal:

Fulgencio Garcia among thousands who need bone marrow donors

Bone marrow donor drive set for Saturday at local school

By PAUL HARASIM
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Dr. Armen Nikogosian has a hard time believing Fulgencio Garcia can do what he does.

Though the internist’s 41-year-old patient suffers from an acute leukemia that Nikogosian describes as “an excruciating ache inside all his bones,” Garcia continues to work full time as a delivery man for a seafood company that caters to casinos.

“Up until six months ago, he (Garcia) was working two full-time jobs,” Nikogosian said Tuesday as he sat in his office near Spring Valley Hospital in southwest Las Vegas. “And he’s been suffering with this for five years now. It’s incredible. It’s just the way he is. He’s got three kids, and he wants to be a good dad. Somehow, he fights through the pain.”

Garcia may not have much longer to fight, however.

“The disease has progressed significantly,” Nikogosian said. “If the disease transforms into an even more aggressive form, he might have a year or two left.”

It is that sobering prognosis that has prompted Garcia’s family and friends to hold a bone marrow donor drive Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at American Heritage Academy, 6126 S. Sandhill Road, near Tropicana Avenue.

“His disease is completely curable if he can find a matching donor,” Nikogosian said. “I sure hope it works out. This could literally be a little hiccup in his past if it does.”

On Monday, Garcia walked into the academy carrying 3-year-old Adrian, still too young to attend the private school that his brothers, Antonio, 13, and Sebastian, 5, attend on scholarship.

Moved by what Garcia’s wife, Rachel, told her a few months ago about her husband’s condition, Maria Luebke, an administrator at the school, did an Internet search and found that an international organization known as DKMS recruits bone marrow donors for leukemia patients.

E-mails and phone calls to the donor center’s New York office led to Saturday’s planned event.

As he holds his little boy, Garcia grimaces as he moves the sleeping child from one shoulder to another. Tears well in his eyes.

“I want to see my boys grow up,” he said. “I don’t want my wife to have to do it alone.”

On hand for the donor drive will be 21-year-old Aaron Vilhauer of Pahrump. Last year, he donated bone marrow at an Orange County, Calif., hospital in an outpatient procedure that saved the life of an 11-year-old boy in Maryland.

He wants people to know that donating is safe and painless.

“At first, I have to admit, I almost backed out because of rumors I heard about the pain,” he said. “But I went through it and there was nothing to it. When I woke up, I didn’t think they had started yet. I went out and partied afterward.”

Most bone marrow donations do not even involve surgery. About 75 percent of the time, a nonsurgical blood stem cell donation, much like donating platelets at a blood bank, is all that’s required. The surgery that Vilhauer had involved collecting stem cells from the pelvic area.

Vilhauer said he had originally signed up for a DKMS bone marrow drive at Red Rock Casino in 2008.

“I had always given blood because my mother said it was the right thing to do, so when I saw this drive to help a medical student, I said, ‘Why not?’”

The cheek swab sample taken by medical technicians did not turn out to be a match for the medical student. But his sample was placed in the Be The Match Registry overseen by the National Marrow Donor Program, which works through a network of more than 100 local and regional recruitment organizations such as DKMS.

“I had forgotten all about it, and then I got a call about a year later that I was a match for this little boy,” Vilhauer said.

“I’ve never felt better about doing anything in my life,” he said.

About 70 percent of people in need of a transplant do not have a matching donor in their family. That is the case with Garcia.

Only about four of 10 people who need a match each year are able to get a lifesaving transplant.

Though Hispanics such as Garcia make up approximately 15 percent of the nation’s population, they comprise just 10 percent of potential donors. Bone marrow recipients generally match the racial or ethnic group of the donor.

Garcia prays that people of all ethnic groups will decide to come to the donor drive Saturday.

Each year, more than 10,000 Americans are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma, and their best or only hope of a cure is a transplant from an unrelated donor.

Although Garcia hopes Saturday’s drive will turn out to be a lifesaver, he knows that other such drives around the country could also be what eventually saves his life.

On Feb. 6, there will be another bone marrow drive nearby in Henderson. This one will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Galleria Mall near J.C. Penney by the National Marrow Donor Program of Southern California and the Southwest.

Garcia is tired of having to take pain medication to get through the day. And he wishes he could go back to his second full-time job of sanitizing salad dressing machines late at night.

“We used to be able to rent a nice house, but now we have had to move into a two-bedroom apartment and we’re still having money problems,” he said. “Once I get a transplant and get well, I can make the money I need to give my family a good life. They deserve that.”

More often than not these days I am constantly needing to bounce large projects and somehow get them into mp3 format for clients. Well, it is impossible to bounce a project to mp3 larger than 2GB (go figure). My first attempt to bounce a 117min project to mp3 resulted in the error message below:

Obviously choosing a shorter bounce time will make the long project incomplete so here is the work around. First, you must convert/bounce your project to the CAF format. To do this, Bounce the project, in the PCM Destination File Format select CAF.

If you look at the file size of your newly created CAF file, it should be huge (assuming you have a large project). For this particular example, my clients project ended up being 1.68 GB.

Now that we have an exported file to work with, open up Compressor and import your CAF. Navigate to the MP3 for Audio Podcasting and add the setting to your CAF then submit:

Upon completion, you’ll have your mp3. Notice the size difference between the above CAF and the mp3 below:

I went from a 1.68 GB file to a 129.6 MB file. It’s all pretty simple really. You just have to go through the motions and use the tools.

Steve has been training with former Light Heavyweight Champ Derrick Harmon for the past couple years. A month ago or so, the Hard Rock Hotel decided to host an amateur fight night at The Joint. So, last night, Casino Hosts and other nightlife-ers from around Vegas entered the competition. All proceeds went to a couple charities.

Where does IMAGIKA fit in? Skin Radio Las Vegas (iTunes link), a radio client of mine, was invited to be there. We were ring side calling the fight. As usual, we used Logic Pro 8 to record the fight. Also had one of our EX1’s there to grab some broll. In all the event was a success. Big thanks to Steve Cyr and the Hard Rock Hotel for letting us and Skin Radio Las Vegas call the fight ringside.
